Design for games & play; Game design : LAByrinth By Flabulous

In this course the project was to develop a game from start to end. Together with a team I worked to create a game concept and make it real. The game was called LAByrinth. LAByrinth is a 2.5d roguelike game with 2d side-scrolling. It is a game to keep challenging players. Each level is completely random every time you enter it as a player. In addition, the game offers an interesting twist from multiple aspects (gameplay, story).

My reflection about the project

My role within the team was mainly working on the visuals of the game. This meant creating some of the characters, weapons and the animations that accompanied them. However, I also helped some with the programming early on by writing and introducing enemies having a range before the attack. Furthermore, I involved myself a lot with writing the report and giving input during the ideation throughout the project.

A learning point for me was the relation between mechanics and how it contributes to making the game fun. I now know that there a dynamics in between these that we have to consider. I also never stopped to think that fun is also quite a broad term. As for the motivation of players I have read about this before but it helped to read about it again. Furthermore, at the start of the course, I thought that you should create the game first and let the player types that fit it come towards the game. I now realize that this is not a smart manner of doing things. It is more beneficial to keep the player type in mind throughout the development which helps to focus on mechanics, decide what has to be left out and create the game that a type of player might be more drawn towards.
