Design Innovation Methods: LETthisplay

In this course project I explored the remaining business opportunities for SmartGoals. This was done in a team. I focused on the several ‘Korein Kinderplein’ daycare locations; we evaluated the existing pain points concerning sport and play at daycares and developed an app that offers all sorts of accessible play with clear explanations. This app can accompany SmartGoals and all kinds of smart interactive game devices. Through elaborate validation sessions the app and business model were refined to the point where the app and its applications can sustain a company separate from SmartGoals. The business model revolves around a renting system; where we would purchase SmartGoals, or any other sport device, and rent it out to any interested party, together with the app.

My reflection about the project

I think it’s easy to say you should have these characteristics to be a good entrepreneur but achieving these is a bit more difficult. When reflecting back on the projects, I think the first moment you can see that I had some difficulty was when creating the design of the product/service. In the previous courses I have enjoyed working with already existing products, however this time it was different. Finding a creative way to address the problem we had chosen was difficult. Of Course I could think of some ideas but they weren’t creative or innovative enough in my opinion. Furthermore the restrictions of SmartGoals made me confused. To overcome these difficulties I relied on my groupmates. By working with them during brainstorming it became clearer what direction I had to start thinking when we helped each other improve the ideas. I think this experience challenged my ability to think creatively but also shows that I tried to look ahead. Entrepreneurship’s thinking, reasoning were mainly applied here in my opinion.

Innovator’s DNA entails associating, questioning, observing, experimenting and networking. When reflecting on the projects, to me it seems all these skills were used at some point and were also naturally brought up in the process. Associating is a skill that I believe was used throughout the project. At the start it was used to find a marketplace for SmartGoals other than sports. The association of SmartGoals, games and children was used to target daycares. Furthermore, associating was used to connect possible technology and the problems to create design ideas.
