User Centered Design

During this course the project I worked on was about handling money. With money becoming less physical, how do we teach children the value and weight money carries. It was chosen to create a concept that makes intangible money feel more tangible. The design was as follows: A black box because we wanted to make it look like a safe. The papers inside represent the output of the screen. When you turn the button the papers will slide to the new output. The button is meant to be used by the child to add money. The more money the child owns, the harder it gets to turn the button. In our prototype someone behind the box makes the button harder to turn by holding it. With our prototype we wanted to see if the user gets an idea of the value of money if the button gets harder to turn. Therefore we wanted this question related to implementation answered. The paper was chosen to show how the screen changes and give an example to the user. This was done to give us answers about the look-and-feel aspect of the concept and also to tell something about the role.

My reflection about the project

I would say my expectations were met but also a bit more. The assignments in this course pushed me a bit out of my comfort zone. We needed to interview people for example, however I couldn’t interview people I knew, so I had to go out in a shopping Center and ask people. I didn’t really like this but it did teach me this experience of approaching people. Also this time working in a group went better than before when it came to communication. It was clear what I had to do and I learned a lot of information. Using techniques like making a task description or persona can help discover flaws in a concept and I will definitely use it later. When making the concept I hadn’t expected it to become like now but I like it. I now know that prototypes don’t have to be perfect and low fidelity is an option. In the end I’m satisfied with the end result and how the group worked. There were various different techniques that I learned from doing this project. Doing QOC analysis, creating personas and making scenarios.
